in honor of mars stepping into gemini, let’s delve into some astro-info-tainment!
today, i found myself caught up in a new passion project – fully throwing myself down the rabbit hole of an idea that preoccupies me, brainstorming, researching, following hunches and little trails of information. the topic is something that comes up often when i think about music:
i resonate really deeply with artists who share my sun and mercury signs.
the running list started small but poingnantly to me: isaac brock (modest mouse), sufjan stevens, and john mccrea (cake). all firsts and favorites in my life, and there was something intangible about them that spoke my language. the realization happened quietly at first, plugging in sufjan’s birth data to guess at why he is… the way that he is. and i was pleasantly surprised to see that we had the same sun and mercury sign! filed that away in my brain as a neat little thing, and didn’t think about it again until… another artist with the same sun/mercury! and another! and another!
there’s something about their lyrics that is straightforward or mundane, highly descriptive, simple but with a range of vocabulary, and hinting at something really feelings-y happening underneath. like they have their own pantheon of personal references, metaphors whose meanings are inscrutable to an outside observer, but whose words are frank.
and i feel it. and it’s very hard to put words to something that holds up the mirror to you so nebulously. it’s more like seeing your reflection through a mist, refracted.
i should say that i’m really musical in passion but not in practice. it’s always eluded and terrified me! but my favorite music is really part of my identity, and my wife is a musician, and i may or may not have a secret trove of “lyrics” in my notes app that no one has ever seen. just a totally casual observer here, no aspiration at all!
but for some reason today, i was catapulted into finding as many ♋︎ ☉ + ♊︎ ☿ singers as i could find (again, i’m looking at you, ♊︎♂︎). and making a playlist. with the intention of listening to it, as if scrying. listening into the void, to maybe meet my own musical self there. or maybe just for fun!

now, i know nothing about a lot of these artists. so it’s not like, oh, i automatically love every artist with my sun and mercury placements! and when i learned that some of my astrology twins were jason mraz (the wimpy bad hat man?!) and post malone (white rapper known for smelling bad?!) i was UPSET! and my list includes viral-stars-circa-2011 rebecca black and tay zonday?! some stay dry while others feel the pain.
there are a couple obvious limitations to how far i want to study, and questions that are as-of-yet unanswered:
- not all lead singers are the songwriters, and sometimes it’s hard to find the credits. it can be collaborative anyway!
- i would think that the moon and mercury sharing your signs would be pretty strongly felt too. although with celebrities’ unknown birth times it’s not always possible to pinpoint the correct moon sign.
- a lot of singers aren’t listed in birth chart databases
- what about other personal planets? would having 2-3 matches with the sun/moon/mercury/venus/mars in any combination feel resonant?
- or other synastry aspects? sun trine sun? moon conjunct sun? mercury conjunct moon?
ultimately, it’s my logic that whether or not the lead singer is the sole songwriter, they are the one voicing the lyrics, communicating them, embodying them in a mercurial way, and that’s enough for me!
